About the Long Island Railroad

One of the oldest and busiest commuter railroad lines in North America, the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) serves over 300,000 commuters a day on 11 branches stretching from Montauk on the northern tip of Long Island to Penn Station in Manhattan. LIRR also offers service to Long Island Islip MacArthur Airport (ISP) and connects to AirTrain to JFK Airport.
What You Need to Know
*LIRR stops at Ronkonkoma station, only about 1.5 miles from ISP. Passengers bound for ISP can take the Colonial Transportation Shuttle, which goes directly to the airport. Package fares covering both the train and the Colonial Transportation Shuttle are available, saving individual passengers as much as $4.50 in fares. See details below.
*LIRR connects to AirTrain JFK at Jamaica station. From most parts of the city, commute time to Jamaica Station is about an hour. Travel time from Jamaica Station to JFK on AirTrain is about 15 minutes.
Before You Leave
*If you plan on arriving and/or departing from ISP, LIRR offers package rates that cover both the train fare and the shuttle fare. These packages can only be purchased in advance from the ticket office or from gray or blue ticket kiosks. They cannot be purchased from the train or online, so plan ahead. Packages are one-way only. Passengers both departing and arriving from ISP who plan on using the shuttle and LIRR both ways should each purchase two packages. For current fares and other information, please visit the LIRR website listed below.
The Colonial Transportation Shuttle picks up and drops off passengers on the north side of the station off platform A curbside near the Dunkin' Donuts. It meets all Ronkonkoma trains and stops at the airport at the curbside baggage claim.
*Be you have the cash you need in small bills. While LIRR ticket booths and kiosks, and AirTrain ticket booths accept credit and debit cards, buses and New York subways do not.
*Carry only luggage you can reasonably carry yourself. LIRR has no luggage-handling services and you should be able to hold your luggage in your lap or in the overhead racks without blocking aisles or doors.
*When travelling to all airports, be prepared with proper identification for travelling. Be advised that American travelers returning from Canada and Mexico are now required to carry a US Passport to be readmitted to the United States.
